Gopher Faces

A few weeks ago, Tanner came home from school and in a nonchalant sort-of way, asks me what 'detention' meant. Great. Of course, my interest was peaked, so I asked him where he had heard that word. He tells me that his music teacher had said it during their class that day. After a little more prodding, he tells me that he and one of his little buddies had been making gopher faces during class. Lovely. What an appropriate thing to be doing during music class -- making gopher faces. When I asked him why he had been making faces, he says that he didn't like the songs they were singing. Oh, ok...so, he was bored and decided to be disrespectful and make gopher faces at his teacher. Niiice. Well, come to find out, the teacher had gotten angry with them, separated them, and told them that if they kept it up, they'd get detention. Wow -- I had no clue they even had such a thing as detention in third grade. They don't mess around these days!!

I was glad that Tanner opened up and told me what had happened. But I didn't think that he should get off the hook that easily! So, I asked him what he thought he should do about it. He decided to write Ms. G an apology note. It was his choice to write the note, and I thought it was a great idea! So, he did, and that was that. I haven't really thought about it since.

Well...today I was blog stalking. I just happened to come across Ms. G's blog on a sidebar of someone else's and started browsing through it. !! I've never even talked to her, but from what the kids have said and from the performances we've seen at the school, she seems like a fun, exciting music teacher! Well, you can imagine the look on my face when I found THIS --

Sorry, Ms. G. There actually was one other adult who knew about it. But hopefully Tanner learned a lesson from this experience -- even if it was only knowing that making gopher faces during music class is not cool.

13 people made my day!:

Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwesome. I don't know who I love more right now - Ms. G or Tanner. While I consider it, I'm going to practice my gopher face.

That's so funny. Cute note. You should print in Mrs. G blog post and put it in Tanner's scrap book.

Came across your blog randomly (thru Blogger) Anyway I just LOVED your little story about the gopher faces...but mostly the apology from your little one! What a great testament of choosing the right.(CTR)
And how funny (or not) that his teacher would post it, too. At least she appreciated his thoughtfulness!
It's moments like this that we truly know that poptarts and cheerios for lunch are OK...and letting our girls twirl in the backyard in nothing but ballerina outfits is what a happy childhood is ALL about.
God Bless
Jenn

What a great little story -- and how wonderful of you to record it! You have a GREAT kid in that Tanner Man. And what a good mom YOU are to make sure you figured out what exactly happened and then to help him figure out what HE needed to do.
